February 17, 2025: Karan Johar on Filmmaking & the Power of Conviction

Ace filmmaker Karan Johar recently shared his thoughts on storytelling and blockbuster filmmaking in an interview with Komal Nahta for the YouTube channel Game Changers. He emphasised that a film’s success is not necessarily rooted in logic but in the conviction with which it is made.

SS Rajamouli’s Films Lack Logic But Win Big

While discussing how conviction trumps logic, Karan Johar cited SS Rajamouli as a prime example.

“Logic doesn’t matter in a film. Take any film by Rajamouli sir—where do you see logic? You only see conviction. And when conviction comes to the forefront, even the audience believes in it,” said Johar.

Blockbusters Like RRR, Animal, and Gadar Succeeded Because of Conviction

Expanding on his point, Johar referenced some of the biggest Indian box office hits, stating that these films relied on conviction rather than logical storytelling.

“Look at the biggest films—whether it’s Animal, RRR, or Gadar—these films are made with conviction. If you can defeat a thousand people with a single hand pump, that’s conviction, right? Anil Sharma believes Sunny Deol can do it, and the audience believes it too.”

He also emphasized that self-doubt and excessive focus on logic can kill a film’s magic. “Filmmakers need to stop second-guessing themselves and their audiences. Conviction is what creates magic on screen,” he added.
