March 18, 2025: Karan Johar recently addressed the backlash faced by Ibrahim Ali Khan and Khushi Kapoor over their performances in the film Nadaaniyan, which is backed by his production house, Dharma Productions. The movie, marking the Bollywood debut of Ibrahim Ali Khan and Khushi Kapoor, failed to impress both critics and the audience. Their performances were heavily criticized, and both newcomers faced trolling online.
During the trailer launch of the Punjabi film Akaal in Mumbai, Karan broke his silence on the backlash. He condemned the harsh reviews, stating, “Main bas ye hi kahunga, ek purani film ka alfaaz hai ki kuch toh log kahenge, logon ka kaam hai kehna... chhodo bekaar ki baatein, beet na jaaye raina,” which roughly translates to: “Some people will always have something to say, it’s their job to talk. Let them be, don’t bother with unnecessary things, and let the night pass.”
Karan added that his relationship with critics remains unchanged, regardless of the reviews. He clarified that he doesn’t believe in conspiracy theories, stating, "I don’t have any conspiracy theory that they are doing it deliberately to bring down the film. Kabhi kabhi trollers karte hain, voh bhi benaam log hai, bechare unka apna problem hai, voh hum par nikal rahe hain."
Nadaaniyan marks the Bollywood debut of Ibrahim, the son of Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh. Prior to this, Khushi Kapoor, the younger daughter of the late Sridevi and Boney Kapoor, had been seen in other projects like Loveyapa and The Archies, none of which managed to win the audience's favor.
Punjabi actor-singer Gippy Grewal also spoke up in defense of Ibrahim and Khushi, highlighting the challenges every newcomer faces in the industry. He recalled how when they made Carry On Jatta, many people had doubted its success. “When we made Carry On Jatta, we heard many people say ‘these people are working as if the film will make 100 crores’. And we did it. So, I feel like there's nothing to be upset about. These things boost you up," Gippy said.
He further added that even Saif Ali Khan must have faced similar criticism during his debut, but today, no one can question his acting. Gippy emphasized that it’s a part of the journey and that these early experiences serve as motivation to improve and prove oneself.
Nadaaniyan, available on Netflix, also stars Suniel Shetty, Jugal Hansraj, Dia Mirza, and Mahima Chaudhry, but the film's reception was largely lukewarm. Despite the criticisms, both Ibrahim and Khushi remain part of the industry’s future, and many feel that time and consistent efforts will help them overcome early struggles.
