Karur Stampede Case: Thalapathy Vijay Headed To Delhi For CBI Questioning

The actor-politician arrived at the CBI headquarters on Monday, January 12, following a Supreme Court-monitored probe into the September tragedy.

January 12, 2026: In a high-stakes moment for his burgeoning political career, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay appeared before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) at its New Delhi headquarters today, Monday, January 12, 2026.

The actor-turned-politician emplaned from Chennai earlier this morning on a chartered flight. His appearance follows a summons issued on January 6 under Section 179 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). The probe centers on the horrific stampede that occurred on September 27, 2025, during his debut political rally in Karur, which claimed 41 lives—including 18 women and 10 children.

The Core of the Investigation

The CBI, which took over the case from a state-appointed SIT following a Supreme Court order, is investigating several critical lapses:

  • The Delayed Arrival: While the event was scheduled for 3:00 PM, Vijay reportedly arrived at 7:30 PM. Authorities allege this four-hour delay caused the massive crowd (estimated at 27,000 in a venue meant for 10,000) to become restless and dehydrated.
  • Organisational Failure: The probe is looking into why proper food, water, and medical facilities were absent despite the scorching afternoon heat and the presence of elderly women and children.
  • Security Lapses: The CBI has already questioned the driver of Vijay’s campaign vehicle and examined the modified van to see if its movements contributed to the sudden crowd surge.

Political Tug-of-War

The case has become a major flashpoint between the TVK and the ruling DMK government in Tamil Nadu.

  • TVK’s Defence: Party office-bearers, including Bussy Anand, have submitted video footage to the CBI, alleging that the state police failed to provide adequate protection and that the tragedy was a result of government negligence.
  • State’s Counter: The Tamil Nadu government recently filed a counter-affidavit in the Supreme Court, arguing that Vijay should not be allowed to “choose his investigating agency” since he and his party are named as accused in the primary FIR.

Cinema & Politics: A Double Crisis?

The CBI summons comes at a time when Vijay’s cinematic projects are also facing hurdles. His upcoming film, Jana Nayagan (The People’s Leader), is currently embroiled in a certification row with the CBFC, which reportedly delayed its scheduled January 9 release.

While Vijay’s supporters gathered in small groups outside the CBI headquarters today, the Delhi Police had already intensified security following a formal request from the TVK to prevent any untoward incidents during his visit.
