Kate Hudson Regrets Turning Down Role In ‘The Devil Wears Prada’

February 22, 2025: Actress and singer Kate Hudson has expressed her regret over turning down the iconic 2006 film The Devil Wears Prada, a role that ultimately went to Anne Hathaway. Hudson, who reflected on the decision years later, admitted it was a “bad call,” especially after seeing the film’s success. The movie, directed by David Frankel and based on Lauren Weisberger’s novel, has since become a pop culture phenomenon, with standout performances from Meryl Streep and Hathaway.

In an interview with Deadline, Hudson revealed that her decision was primarily due to timing conflicts. She said, “It was one of those things where I couldn’t do it, and I should’ve made it happen, and I didn’t.” Despite her feelings of regret, Hudson acknowledged that “everything happens for a reason,” offering some comfort by recognizing that things worked out the way they were meant to.

At the time of The Devil Wears Prada’s release, Hudson was already a rising star with roles in films like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003) and The Skeleton Key (2005). In the years following, she starred in a number of other successful projects, including You, Me and Dupree (2006) and Fool’s Gold (2008). Still, she couldn’t help but reflect on what might have been.

The film’s story, centered around Hathaway’s character, Andy Sachs, a young assistant to the powerful Miranda Priestly (Streep), remains a beloved part of cinematic history. Hudson also admitted that timing and the nature of film schedules often dictate career choices. “It’s funny, it’s waves of things that are happening and people shooting at different times,” she shared, explaining how she couldn’t have taken on the role due to other commitments.

In 2022, Hathaway, who played the lead role, hinted that a sequel to The Devil Wears Prada could be in the works. However, she noted that it might be difficult to revisit the story, given the shift in the industry towards digital media and the film’s focus on producing a physical product.

Hudson’s remarks about The Devil Wears Prada offer a rare glimpse into the decisions that shape an actor’s career and how the timing of opportunities can sometimes lead to missed chances. Nonetheless, Hudson’s impressive body of work continues to resonate with audiences, and her reflections only add to the fascinating history of the film that many consider a career-defining moment for those involved.
