Katy Perry to Join All-Women Crew in Historic Blue Origin Spaceflight Led by Lauren Sánchez
Washington | April 14, 2025:
Pop icon Katy Perry is set to lift off to the edge of space alongside Jeff Bezos’s fiancée Lauren Sánchez and four other inspiring women, as part of Blue Origin’s first-ever all-female space mission, scheduled for Monday morning from Texas.

The NS-31 mission of the New Shepard rocket will include six influential women:
This historic flight is being hailed as the first all-women space mission since 1963, when Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to travel solo into space.

The New Shepard capsule is expected to reach a height of 100 km (62 miles), officially crossing the Kármán line, the internationally recognized boundary of space. The 11-minute flight will allow passengers to experience four minutes of weightlessness and view the Earth from space through large windows before the capsule descends using parachutes.

Lauren Sánchez, who leads the mission, told Elle that she handpicked the crew based on their “ability to inspire others.” Katy Perry, thrilled by the call, revealed she had long dreamed of going to space:
“I was like, ‘Sign me up! I’m first in line.’ And then they called me, and I was like, ‘Really? I get an invite?’”
While the mission is a dream come true for Perry, Bowe, Nguyen, and Flynn, Gayle King admitted she initially declined the offer:
“When I got the call… my first reaction was no,” she said, though she eventually reconsidered despite her “trepidation.”
Although this mission qualifies as space tourism, none of the passengers will earn the title of “astronaut” under the strict definitions set by NASA, the FAA, or the US military, which require specific qualifications and flight roles.
With this mission, Blue Origin will have sent 58 people into space since its 2021 debut voyage, which included Jeff Bezos himself. Other high-profile participants have included actor William Shatner, who at 90 became the oldest person in space.
Shatner later described the experience as emotionally overwhelming, calling the blackness of space “the strongest feeling of grief I’ve ever encountered.”
The NS-31 launch is scheduled for 8:30 AM (local time) on April 14, from Blue Origin’s launch facility in West Texas.
