Affidavit rule for non-Hindus sparks debate ahead of Char Dham Yatra
March 18, 2026: Bollywood actor Sara Ali Khan has found herself at the centre of a growing controversy ahead of the Char Dham Yatra 2026, as a proposal to restrict entry of non-Hindus in key temples gains attention. Reports suggest that non-Hindu devotees may be required to submit an affidavit declaring their belief in Sanatan Dharma to visit shrines like Kedarnath Temple, intensifying the debate over religious access and tradition.
Temple committee chairman Hemant Dwivedi stated that visitors, including Sara Ali Khan, would be allowed darshan only after submitting such a declaration of faith. The actor, who has frequently visited Kedarnath and shared her spiritual experiences online, has long been associated with the shrine, especially since her debut film shot in the region. The proposed rule would also apply to Badrinath Temple, introducing a formal process for non-Hindu devotees.
Reacting to the controversy, actor-politician Kangana Ranaut said there should be no hesitation in acknowledging one’s beliefs. The directive has sparked a broader conversation around inclusivity versus preservation of tradition at major pilgrimage sites, with opinions sharply divided as the yatra season approaches.
