While Kuberaa smashes records in Telugu markets, the Tamil version struggles at home, failing to recover even half its breakeven target.
June 29, 2025: Despite featuring Tamil cinema’s powerhouse Dhanush, Kuberaa has turned out to be a box office disappointment in Tamil Nadu. Directed by Sekhar Kammula, the crime drama has received largely positive reviews, but that hasn’t translated into footfalls in Dhanush’s home state.
Strong in Telugu, Staggering in Tamil
While the Telugu version of the film soared past ₹50 crore net — making it Dhanush’s first film to achieve this milestone — the Tamil version is crawling. In its first 8 days, it managed just ₹18.68 crore net, and is expected to close below ₹25 crore gross in Tamil Nadu.
This is alarming considering the theatrical rights for Tamil Nadu were sold at ₹20 crore, and the film required ₹40 crore gross to break even. It’s now officially heading toward a loss for distributors in the state.
Dhanush’s Star Power Not Enough?
The failure of Kuberaa in Tamil Nadu is particularly surprising given Dhanush’s immense fan base. Industry insiders suggest that the film’s grounded, non-massy tone may have limited its appeal in a market that still responds strongly to high-octane commercial entertainment.
