Despite a Saturday surge, Mohanlal’s most expensive Malayalam film struggles to recover its mammoth budget. L2: Empuraan stands at ₹103.71 crore after 17 days in India.
April 14, 2025: After a disappointing Friday, L2: Empuraan—the highly ambitious sequel to Lucifer—witnessed a 168% spike in collections on its 17th day at the box office. The Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran starrer earned ₹43 lakhs on its third Saturday, up from ₹16 lakhs on Friday. However, the spike offers only temporary relief, as the film still needs ₹76 crores to breakeven, a target now looking increasingly out of reach.
Collection Breakdown
- Day 17 (Saturday): ₹43 lakhs
- Total India (All Languages): ₹103.71 crores
- Total Budget (Estimated): ~₹180 crores
While the worldwide performance may cushion the overall impact, L2: Empuraan remains far behind domestic expectations. In India, the film is the highest-grossing Malayalam movie of 2025, but it’s likely to end as the second-biggest Mollywood film of all time, trailing Manjummel Boys which grossed ₹142 crore.
Top Malayalam Grossers of 2025 (India)
- L2: Empuraan – ₹103.71 cr
- Officer On Duty – ₹31.60 cr
- Rekhachithram – ₹27.00 cr
- Ponman – ₹10.15 cr
- Dominic And The Ladies’ Purse – ₹9.29 cr
Despite the scale and hype, Empuraan may go down as a classic case of high ambition meeting budget blues. With dwindling footfalls expected after the weekend, recovery hopes now lie in OTT and satellite rights.
