Controversy & Cuts

L2 Empuraan came under scrutiny for its depiction of sensitive issues including a fictionalized version of the 2002 Gujarat riots. Amid backlash, the makers voluntarily made 24 cuts, altering scenes involving religious structures, violence against women, and even changing the antagonist’s name. Actor-politician Suresh Gopi clarified in Parliament that these changes were made independently by the producers and Mohanlal, in consultation with the director.

About the Film

L2 Empuraan continues the saga of Stephen Nedumpally aka Khureshi Ab’raam, portrayed by Mohanlal. Prithviraj reprises his role as Zayed Masood, his trusted aide. The climax teases L3: The Beginning, with Pranav Mohanlal appearing as the younger Stephen, setting the stage for a prequel.

With a strong weekend expected ahead, trade analysts suggest that L2 Empuraan could cross the ₹100 crore mark soon, reinforcing Mohanlal’s reign at the Malayalam box office.
