L2 Empuraan Box Office Day 9: Mohanlal’s Action Saga Crosses ₹91 Crore, Becomes Highest-Grossing Malayalam Film Ever
April 5, 2025: L2 Empuraan, the much-awaited sequel to Lucifer, is having a dream run at the box office. On its ninth day, the Mohanlal-starrer added ₹3 crore more to its domestic tally, pushing the film’s India net total to ₹91.25 crore, according to Sacnilk. The Prithviraj Sukumaran directorial is now officially the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time.
Released on March 27, the film had an explosive ₹21 crore opening and amassed ₹88.25 crore in its first week. While weekday collections dipped into single digits, the movie has remained steady, and with the weekend on the horizon, another surge is expected.

Globally, L2 Empuraan has already crossed ₹250 crore, surpassing Manjummel Boys and becoming the highest-grossing Malayalam film worldwide. It also made headlines by beating Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava in the opening weekend race—thanks to its Thursday head-start.
The film hasn’t been controversy-free. Its fictional depiction of events inspired by the 2002 Gujarat riots invited backlash, prompting the makers to voluntarily implement 24 cuts. There were murmurs of political pressure, but Suresh Gopi dismissed such claims during a parliamentary discussion. Despite the uproar, the audience turnout continues strong.
The film also stars Tovino Thomas and Manju Warrier in key roles, and it dives deeper into the Zayed Masood origin story, expanding the Lucifer universe with darker themes and a more intense narrative.
With L2 Empuraan edging close to the ₹100 crore mark domestically, all eyes are now on how high this Malayalam blockbuster can soar.
