L2: Empuraan Day 12 Box Office: Mohanlal-Prithviraj Thriller Crosses ₹100 Crore in India Despite Controversy

With ₹100.10 crore earned domestically and ₹250 crore worldwide, the political action sequel continues its dream run even after major cuts and criticism

Mumbai, April 8L2: Empuraan, the sequel to the 2019 blockbuster Lucifer, has officially crossed the ₹100 crore mark at the Indian box office. Starring Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran, the political action thriller added ₹1.75 crore on Day 12 (Monday), taking its domestic total to ₹100.10 crore.

Despite facing stiff competition from Salman Khan’s Sikandar, Empuraan has shown impressive resilience in its second week. The film, which released on March 27, has not only sustained solid footfalls but also become the highest-grossing Malayalam film ever, earning over ₹250 crore globally.

📈 Box Office Journey So Far:

  • Opening Day: ₹21 crore (India net)
  • Week 1 Total: ₹88.25 crore
  • Second Weekend:
    • Friday: ₹2.9 crore
    • Saturday: ₹3.35 crore
    • Sunday: ₹3.85 crore
    • Monday (Day 12): ₹1.75 crore

While the box office numbers tell a success story, Empuraan hasn’t had a controversy-free run. The film sparked backlash due to its depiction of events inspired by the 2002 Gujarat riots, with critics labeling it “anti-national.” The CBFC ordered 24 cuts, and the makers complied, trimming 2 minutes and 8 seconds, including renaming the villain and altering riot-related sequences.

🎬 Plot Summary:

Mohanlal returns as Stephen Nedumpally aka Khureshi Ab’raam, now aiming to reclaim his power from overseas. With Zayed (Prithviraj Sukumaran) by his side, he sets his sights on toppling Chief Minister Jathin Ramdas (Tovino Thomas) and reshaping the political chessboard of Kerala.

Despite the heat, the film’s powerful storytelling, performances, and cinematic scale have drawn audiences back into theatres. Empuraan stands as a testament to Malayalam cinema’s ability to break language and regional barriers.
