Singer-songwriter and actor Lady Gaga is confirmed to perform at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
Earlier, fans speculated that the ‘Shallow’ singer would join Celine Dion, Dua Lipa, Ariana Grande, and French singer Aya Nakamura on the River Seine in Paris. However, the lineup of performers has largely been kept secret. Speculations began when Gaga and Dion were seen arriving in Paris ahead of the Olympics. Social media footage captured the ‘A Star Is Born’ star waving to admirers from her car in the French capital.
Gaga, a Grammy and Oscar-winning performer, has been busy with her upcoming film ‘Joker: Folie A Deux’, where she plays Harley Quinn opposite Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck/Joker. She has also been headlining her Las Vegas residency show, Enigma + Jazz & Piano.
‘Joker: Folie A Deux’, a sequel to the 2019 film ‘Joker’, is set to release in theaters on October 4, 2024, after premiering at the Venice Film Festival. The first ‘Joker’ won the Golden Lion at Venice in 2019 and was a critical and commercial success. It received 11 Oscar nominations, with Joaquin Phoenix winning Best Actor and Hildur Gudnadottir winning for Original Score. The sequel, set mostly in Arkham Asylum, will see Phoenix reprise his role, with Lady Gaga joining as Harley Quinn.
This new installment will be separate from other DC films like the upcoming ‘Superman’ and ‘The Batman: Part II.’ Lady Gaga’s portrayal of Harley Quinn will be distinct from Margot Robbie’s character in ‘Birds of Prey’ and ‘The Suicide Squad,’ and Kaley Cuoco’s animated version in the Max series. Todd Phillips returns as the director and co-writer, with Scott Silver, and Bradley Cooper as a producer.
Lady Gaga’s performance at the Olympic opening ceremony marks her first televised stage appearance since her stripped-down rendition of “Hold My Hand” at the 95th Academy Awards last year, where the song from Top Gun: Maverick was nominated for Best Original Song.
The 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony will air on NBC and stream on Peacock.
