Liam Payne’s Final Project ‘Building the Band’ Set to Premiere on Netflix on This Date

The late One Direction star will be seen as a guest judge on the unique music competition series where contestants form bands without ever meeting in person.

New Delhi, June 12, 2025 – Netflix has officially unveiled the premiere date and trailer for Building the Band, a 10-episode reality competition that marks Liam Payne’s final on-screen appearance before his untimely death in October 2024. The show, which premieres globally on July 9, features Payne as a guest judge, alongside Kelly Rowland and Nicole Scherzinger, who also serves as a mentor on the show.

A Unique Musical Format

Unlike traditional singing competitions, Building the Band introduces a twist: contestants audition for each other from separate booths, selecting their bandmates based solely on musical chemistry—not looks, choreography, or physical presence. Only after the band is formed do the members meet face to face.

Netflix teased the series in a sneak peek, writing:

“Today’s most talented singers will audition for each other and choose their own bandmates BEFORE EVER SEEING THEM! Watch as the first audition leaves the other singers blown away.”

An Emotional Legacy

The series holds extra emotional weight as it was filmed months before Liam Payne’s tragic death in Argentina on October 16, 2024. The 31-year-old singer fell from the third floor of a hotel while vacationing with his girlfriend. Building the Band thus becomes a poignant final chapter in his career, showcasing his dedication to nurturing the next generation of talent.
