May 26, 2025: Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch made a massive splash over Memorial Day weekend, beating out Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning to claim the top spot at the domestic box office.

Debuting in theaters on Friday, May 23, Lilo & Stitch raked in an impressive $183 million in North America, according to Box Office Mojo. Globally, the film has grossed $341.7 million, making it the biggest Memorial Day opening ever — unadjusted for inflation — as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

In contrast, Cruise’s action-packed eighth installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise brought in $77 million domestically and $190 million worldwide. Despite high expectations and a star-studded cast, The Final Reckoning couldn’t keep up with Disney’s family-friendly alien adventure.

Lilo & Stitch introduces young Hawaiian actress Maia Kealoha as Lilo, who unexpectedly befriends Stitch, a genetically-engineered alien with a mischievous streak. The film features the return of Chris Sanders — creator of the original 2002 animated classic — as the voice of Stitch.

The cast also includes Sydney Agudong as Lilo’s protective sister Nani, Kaipo Dudoit as David, Courtney B. Vance as Cobra Bubbles, Billy Magnussen as Pleakley, and Zach Galifianakis as the eccentric Dr. Jumba Jookiba.

Meanwhile, The Final Reckoning stars Cruise, 62, alongside franchise regulars Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames, with newcomers Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, Angela Bassett, Nick Offerman, and more. The film continues the storyline from Dead Reckoning (2023), as Ethan Hunt and his team battle a powerful artificial intelligence known as “the Entity.”

Both Lilo & Stitch and Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning are now playing in theaters nationwide.
