Lorde Makes Triumphant Return With First Solo Track in 4 Years: “What Was That”
Washington DC, April 24:
Pop sensation Lorde has officially returned to the music scene with her first solo single in nearly four years. Titled “What Was That,” the track and accompanying video mark a bold and personal new direction following her 2021 album Solar Power.
Co-produced by Jim-E Stack and Grammy-winning producer Dan Nigro, the song embraces raw emotion and vulnerability—something Lorde alluded to in her announcement on Instagram:
“As little between us as possible. Aliveness over prowess. Naivete over disenchantment. I LOVE YOU. WE START HERE.”
Set against the backdrop of New York City, the video features Lorde riding a bicycle through the streets, soaking in the urban solitude. It also includes scenes from a surprise pop-up appearance at Washington Square Park, which she attempted earlier this week.
“What Was That” comes as Lorde’s first major release since Solar Power and her recent Coachella performance with Charli XCX. Critics and fans alike are celebrating the single’s introspective tone and minimalist aesthetic, anticipating more music soon from the New Zealand star.
With this release, Lorde signals a new era—one that values connection over perfection and vulnerability over polish.
