Kajol’s much-awaited return to the big screen, Maa, has shown encouraging signs at the box office over its opening weekend. The mythological horror film, directed by Vishal Furia, collected ₹6.75 crore on Sunday, taking its three-day total to ₹17.40 crore, according to Sacnilk.

The film recorded an overall Hindi occupancy of 31.17% on Sunday, with evening shows seeing the highest turnout at 46.68%. Although reviews have been mixed—praising Kajol’s performance but criticizing the second half—the genre novelty and mythological angle seem to have resonated with audiences.

Box Office Clash with Kannappa

Maa released alongside Vishnu Manchu’s action-fantasy film Kannappa, which featured cameo appearances by Prabhas, Akshay Kumar, and Mohanlal. While Kannappa had more star power, Maa outperformed it on Day 3, earning ₹6.75 crore compared to Kannappa’s ₹5.66 crore. However, in total weekend numbers, Maa is still playing catch-up.

About the Film

Produced by Ajay Devgn, Jyoti Deshpande, and Kumar Mangat Pathak, Maa is Kajol’s first horror film. The plot follows Aambika (played by Kajol), a widow who, after her husband’s mysterious death, travels with her daughter to his ancestral village—only to uncover a demonic curse that threatens them both.

The cast includes Ronit Roy, Indraneil Sengupta, and Kherin Sharma in supporting roles.

“I’m a mythology buff,” Kajol shared in a recent interview. “The concept of Maa Kali and Raktabeej has always fascinated me, and Maa brings that legend into a horror format that I couldn’t say no to.”
