Maamla Legal Hai: A Quirky Courtroom Comedy Delights on Netflix

Recently released ‘Maamla Legal Hai’ is a delightful addition to Netflix’s latest line-up of some top quality content.

The series hit the OTT platform, with little fanfare, as ‘The Indarani Mukerjea Story: Buried Truth’, grabbed most of the marketing space.

But, not taking anything away from the series, Maamla Legal Hai, directed by Rahul Pandey, has a stellar star cast including Ravi Kishan, Naila Grewal, Nidhi Bisht, and Yashpal Sharma.

The series, a light hearted comedy, written beautifully by Kunal Aneja and Saurabh Khanna, mixes real life happening with imaginative quirky twists, making it real and relatable, and extremely bizarre and funny at the same time.

The comebacks, retorts and punches are extremely funny and land hard. The scripting is intelligent, and the problems and laughable solutions make funny viewing of important issues, in a good way!

Led by Ravi Kishan and supported by a talented ensemble, the show takes place in the fictional Patparganj District Court, introducing audiences to a cast of quirky characters and lawyers navigating through peculiar legal dilemmas.

The cast also features several established actors such as Tanvi Azmi as a judge; Yashpal Sharma as Tyagi’s rival; and Brijendra Kala as a veteran lawyer. Nidhi Bisht plays a mid-career lawyer, who dreams of having her own chamber, and Naila Grewal is a Harvard-graduate who dreams of following in her grandfather’s footsteps and working as a ‘legal aid’.

Nidhi Bisht deserves special mention, as her portrayal of Shushma didi, takes our heart away each time she comes on screen.

One of the earliest members of The Viral Fever, Nidhi apart from being an actor and film maker, is also a lawyer. This has helped her layer her performance and give it depth.

What sets “Maamla Legal Hai” apart is its ability to find humour in the absurdity of real-life legal situations, all while remaining relevant and entertaining. The inclusion of bizarre cases such a man seeking divorce on the ground that his wife was not coy on their wedding night, or a case filed against a foul-mouthed parrot; a female prisoner who desires not only to tie the knot but also to consummate her marriage; and the lawyers coming up with ways, including veiled threats, when a groom’s father is adamant on getting his son’s marriage annulled and more.

The episode featuring Vivek Mushran, as a big lawyer with an even bigger reputation, who comes to Patparganj Court seeking settlement on behalf of his real-estate client and how, Ravi Kishan, aka, Tyagi, cons him to agree to all demands is quite hilarious too.

The series, however, is not about these legal matters alone. It is also about the people who exist in this world, their dreams and hustles. Furthermore, the series doesn’t shy away from addressing pressing social issues, subtly incorporating them into its narrative.

Overall, “Maamla Legal Hai” is a must-watch for fans of courtroom dramas and comedy alike. Don’t miss it for the world.
