Salman Khan’s upcoming action-drama Maatrubhumi has reportedly undergone significant creative shifts ahead of its much-anticipated release. Originally titled Battle of Galwan and centered on the 2020 India-China border conflict, the project has seen nearly 40% of its content reshot.

This overhaul comes following a request from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to alter the narrative to reflect the current diplomatic climate between the two nations.
According to reports from Bollywood Hungama, the MoD expressed reservations about the film’s direct depiction of the real-life conflict. To secure the necessary No Objection Certificate (NOC), director Apoorva Lakhia and Salman Khan have pivoted toward a more fictionalized storyline. The reshot portions reportedly include expanded backstories, romantic sequences involving leading lady Chitrangda Singh, and a shift away from specific historical mentions to maintain a neutral tone.
Diplomatic Sensitivities Lead to Narrative Shift
The most striking change is the reported instruction to avoid any mention of “China” in the film. Sources indicate that the latest cut submitted to the Ministry earlier this month has scrubbed all direct references to the neighboring country. This decision aligns with recent improvements in India-China bilateral relations, as the Ministry aims to avoid content that could potentially escalate tensions or misrepresent the current geopolitical status.

“Earlier, the film was inspired by a real event. But as per the request of the Ministry of Defence, Salman Khan and director Apoorva Lakhia reshot the film by adding a fictional spin to the story,” a source revealed.
Release Date Uncertainty
While Maatrubhumi was originally slated for an April 17, 2026 release, the extensive reshoots have pushed the schedule back. Though rumors suggest a potential May 2026 release, no official confirmation has been provided by the producers or Salman Khan Films. Meanwhile, the superstar is already looking ahead to his next venture with director Vamshi Paidipally, co-starring Nayanthara, which is expected to dominate the Eid 2027 window.
