Madonna Remembers Her Late Mother: 'I Was Not Afraid Of Death'
March 1, 2025: In a deeply personal note shared on her social media, singer-songwriter Madonna remembered her late mother, Madonna Louise Ciccone, who tragically passed away from breast cancer at the age of 30 in 1966. The emotional message, originally penned in November 2024, revealed how the loss shaped her views on death and her unique way of coping with it.
In the note, Madonna spoke candidly about the impact her mother’s death had on her as a young child. “When I was a child my mother died,” she wrote. “Seeing her beautiful face in the open casket and kissing her red lips to say goodbye, left a haunting memory. A deep longing. A terrible fear of abandonment. I would follow my father everywhere reminding him that if he ever died I wanted to be buried with him.”
Madonna went on to share that her experiences with loss led her to see death in a different light. “I became fascinated with cemeteries. I was not afraid of death because I knew this was the only way I could be with my mother again,” she explained. “As life went on I lost many people that I loved dearly, and came to look at death as kind of a doorway to eternal life.”
Throughout the note, Madonna discussed how she learned to cope with loss and abandonment. “Even when my lovers left me I saw it as a kind of death. When they hurt me I would have a ritualistic burial for them. I would bury my fear of abandonment before it could overtake me.”
Finding comfort in cemeteries, Madonna revealed how visiting the graves of others brought her peace. “I wanted to reassure them that they were not alone. None of us are,” she wrote. “We are all married to God,” she added, recalling the teachings of Sister Mary Theresa who had once said, “I am the bride of Christ. I am the bride of love.” Madonna found solace in these words, imagining that she could share her deepest secrets with the souls of those lost.
The emotional reflection offered a glimpse into Madonna’s complex relationship with death, and her way of using it as a tool for emotional healing.
In addition to this, Madonna shared that she is preparing to rerelease her 1994 album Bedtime Stories and is also working on a sequel to her 2005 album Confessions on a Dance Floor with producer Stuart Price.
Teasing new music in the works, she posted a video of herself in the studio with Price, her boyfriend Akeem Morris, manager Guy Oseary, and her twin daughters, Stella and Estere. “These past few months have been medicine for my SOUL. Songwriting and making music is the one area where I don’t need to ask anyone for their permission… I’m so excited to share it with you,” she captioned the post. “Who wants to hear new music in 2025!”
