Madras High Court Grants Kunal Kamra Interim Anticipatory Bail In Controversial Remarks Case

March 28, 2025: Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra was granted interim anticipatory bail by the Madras High Court on Friday, following multiple FIRs lodged against him over alleged controversial remarks directed at Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Justice Sunder Mohan’s order allows Kamra to remain free until April 7, subject to certain conditions. The comedian had approached the court seeking transit anticipatory bail, citing an increase in threats after making his satirical comments.

Earlier this week, Kamra took to social media to criticize mainstream media, calling them “vultures” and accusing them of spreading misinformation and distracting from critical national issues. He further stated that if mainstream media were to shut down, it would be beneficial to the country and its people. The comedian’s outspokenness continued as he launched a sharp attack on the media’s role in furthering the agenda of the ruling party.

Kamra’s controversial remarks, made during a stand-up show, were aimed at Eknath Shinde, referring to him as a “gaddar” (traitor). These comments sparked a political uproar, leading to public condemnation and calls for action against the comedian. Political figures expressed outrage, and Shinde’s Shiv Sena youth wing, Yuva Sena, went as far as vandalizing the Habitat comedy venue where the show was filmed.

In response to the controversy, Kamra refused to apologize for his remarks, maintaining that comedy is a space for free expression and that the venue where he performed should not be held responsible for his words. He stated that attacking a venue for a comedian’s jokes was as absurd as destroying a lorry for the food it carried.

Kamra also responded to political leaders threatening him with legal consequences, defending his right to freedom of speech and expression. He emphasized that poking fun at politicians is not illegal and is part of the democratic process.

Despite the tensions surrounding the issue, Kamra has expressed his willingness to cooperate with the police, even as he faces increasing scrutiny over his remarks. His stance on free speech and political humor continues to fuel debates on the balance between free expression and the potential for offense in public discourse.
