October 16, 2025: Five-time World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen has opened up on the “seismic shift” in his life following the birth of his first child with partner Ella Victoria in September.

The 34-year-old Norwegian Grandmaster, who recently became a father to a baby boy, admitted that his sleep routine has been significantly curtailed but says he’s embracing every moment of the new era.

Speaking about fatherhood, Carlsen described the experience as “different, of course,” but stressed that he is “certainly enjoying every moment of it.” He also praised the teamwork with his partner, stating, “I think we’re a very good team and we’re getting good help as well.”

Less Sleep, No Problem

When the topic of sleep was raised, the top-ranked chess player in the world revealed a major change in his rest cycle.

“Even though I’m obviously getting significantly less sleep than I was before, I’m still getting enough to get by on most days,” Carlsen said, acknowledging a “two and 2 and a half hour gap” in his sleep overnight. He credited the crucial support from his partner, saying, “Ella is very generous with me.”

Commitment to the Board

Despite the new demands of a baby around the house, the GM asserted his commitment to continue his professional career.

“I still want to compete. I’m still a chess player,” Carlsen affirmed. He acknowledged that his motivation might “be going a bit up and down” with age and his new life phase, but concluded, “I love playing and I think about it and my wife is very understanding.”

Carlsen also addressed the question of whether his son might follow him into the sport. While he has not yet announced the child’s name, the champion vowed not to force the game on his child, but will encourage him to explore it.

“I will not force anything on my kids when that day comes, but I think chess is a great game and it’s fun and I think I will at least encourage my kids to test it,” he added. The baby boy was born on September 27.
