Maharashtra CM Fadnavis Responds to Call For Tax-Free Status For ‘Chhaava’

February 19, 2025: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently addressed the growing demand to grant tax-free status to Chhaava, a period drama that chronicles the life of the legendary Maratha ruler, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. The film, starring Vicky Kaushal in the titular role, has already made a significant impact at the box office, crossing Rs 100 crore in domestic earnings since its release on February 14.

Fadnavis expressed his appreciation for the film’s historical accuracy and positive public reception. Although he had yet to see the film himself, the Chief Minister mentioned, “I am happy that a very good movie has been made on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. While I have yet to watch it, I have heard from people that this film has been made without distorting history.” He also noted that Maharashtra had already removed the entertainment tax in 2017 and assured that the state government would consider the best ways to promote the film and make it accessible to a wider audience.

Directed by Laxman Utekar, Chhaava has been widely praised for its portrayal of the extraordinary life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. Vicky Kaushal’s powerful performance has garnered critical acclaim. The film also stars Akshaye Khanna and Rashmika Mandanna in significant roles. The movie has been performing exceptionally well at the box office, with a remarkable Rs 121.43 crore earned in its opening weekend alone, surpassing initial projections.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh celebrated the film’s success, calling it a “phenomenal” box office performance. He shared his excitement on social media, stating, “‘CHHAAVA’ HAS DHAMAKEDAAR, ZABARDAST WEEKEND… Chhaava sets the #Boxoffice on Sunday, registering a phenomenal opening weekend by crossing the Rs 100 cr mark.”

Industry bodies like the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) have also voiced their support for granting the film tax-exempt status. In a statement, the FWICE emphasized that the legacy of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj should be shared with a wider audience, and they believe that tax exemption would significantly amplify the film’s reach.

Actor Vicky Kaushal, who portrays the historical figure, spoke about the challenges of taking on such a monumental role. He shared that playing Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj was his “toughest role” due to the immense discipline required. “Playing such a historical figure requires a lot of discipline, and discipline is tough. If you are not used to discipline, where I was, it becomes very challenging because it’s not just a one-month commitment; it’s a commitment for one-and-a-half to two years,” he revealed.

With its compelling narrative of bravery, sacrifice, and resilience, Chhaava brings to life the legacy of a ruler whose contributions to the Maratha empire are crucial to India’s history.
