"Main Devdas Tha": Aamir Khan Opens Up About Depression, Alcoholism Post Divorce With Reena Dutta
Mumbai, March 23 – Bollywood icon Aamir Khan has made a candid confession about the darkest phase of his life – the emotional turmoil he experienced following his divorce from Reena Dutta, his first wife and the mother of his two children.
In a recent interview with Instant Bollywood, Aamir recalled how the breakup pushed him into a downward spiral of depression and alcoholism, likening his state to that of the tragic Bollywood character Devdas.
“Main Devdas tha! I was exactly Devdas — someone trying to destroy himself,” Aamir said.
He revealed that following the separation, he isolated himself completely, stopped listening to scripts, and stayed away from work for over a year and a half.
“When Reena and I broke up, I was in mourning for 2-3 years. For almost 1.5 years, I drank a lot. You’ll be shocked – I was a teetotaler. But post the split, I couldn’t sleep and didn’t know what to do. I started drinking and would finish a full bottle every day,” he added.
Aamir shared that what helped him begin the healing process was acceptance.
“You have to acknowledge how important that relationship was. Accept what was yours isn’t there anymore. Also accept how beautiful it was while it lasted – and how much you’ll miss it.”
Aamir Khan and Reena Dutta married in 1986 and have two children – Junaid Khan and Ira Khan. The couple divorced in 2002. He later married filmmaker Kiran Rao in 2005; they parted ways in 2021 and share a son, Azad, via surrogacy.
Recently, Aamir went public with his new partner, Gauri Spratt, at his pre-birthday bash, confirming they’ve been together for 18 months.
