Malaika Owns Her Dance Image
Actor says item numbers at 50 feel empowering, not apologetic
January 14, 2026: Bollywood actor and entrepreneur Malaika Arora has addressed criticism over performing item songs in her 50s, calling the experience empowering rather than controversial. Speaking on The Namrata Zakaria Show on YouTube, Malaika said she sees no reason to shy away from the image she has built over the years. Questioning the need to tone herself down, she stated that dance is a form of expression and added that feeling confident and capable at 50 is something she considers a blessing.
Malaika further shared that performing dance numbers at this stage of her life makes her feel strong and confident. She said the joy she derives from dancing outweighs online trolling and negative opinions. Emphasising the larger message, she noted that if women see her choices as empowering or inspiring, then she believes her work has served a meaningful purpose.
From iconic tracks like Chaiyya Chaiyya, Munni Badnaam and Anarkali Disco Chali to her recent appearance in Poison Baby from Maddock Films’ Thamma, Malaika continues to command attention. Her performance alongside Rashmika Mandanna sparked widespread discussion online, with many saying she stole the spotlight. Despite facing criticism again after her bold moves in the music video Chillgum, Malaika has remained unfazed, continuing to embrace dance on her own terms.
