April 4, 2025: The Indian film industry is mourning the loss of iconic actor, director, and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, who passed away at the age of 87. Known for his patriotic roles, especially in films like Upkar, Purab Aur Paschim, and Roti Kapada Aur Makaan, Kumar’s death has left a deep void in the world of cinema.
Kumar breathed his last at 4:03 am on April 4, 2025, at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai. His son, Kunal Goswami, confirmed that the last rites will be performed at 11 am tomorrow at Pawan Hans in front of Nanavati Hospital, Vile Parle, Mumbai.
In a statement, Kunal expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had paid tribute to his father. “I thank PM Modi for his tweet… Be it Upkar, Purab Aur Paschim, or Roti Kapada Aur Makaan, these movies are still relevant today. The issues he raised are still important, whether in Parliament or in society,” Kunal said.
Manoj Kumar’s cousin, Manish R Goswami, described him as “a true countryman, a true Indian,” highlighting how the actor’s work predominantly focused on national pride and unity. Goswami also reflected on the longstanding bond between Kumar and PM Modi, who had met the actor during the Dadasaheb Phalke Award ceremony and other occasions.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a heartfelt message on X (formerly Twitter), expressed his condolences, stating, “Deeply saddened by the passing of legendary actor and filmmaker Shri Manoj Kumar Ji. He was an icon of Indian cinema, particularly remembered for his patriotic zeal, which was reflected in his films. Manoj Ji’s works ignited a spirit of national pride and will continue to inspire generations. My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this hour of grief. Om Shanti.”
Kumar’s passing was attributed to cardiogenic shock following an acute myocardial infarction, with his health deteriorating over the months due to decompensated liver cirrhosis. He had been hospitalized since February 21, 2025.
Throughout his illustrious career, Manoj Kumar received several prestigious accolades, including the Padma Shri in 1992 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015. His remarkable legacy also earned him seven Filmfare Awards across various categories.
