In a major development that has sent shockwaves across the K-pop industry, Mark Lee has officially announced his departure from global boy group NCT and his agency SM Entertainment. The exit will come into effect from April 8, 2026, marking the end of a decade-long journey with the group.

A Decade-Long Journey Comes to an End

Mark, a Canadian artist known for his versatility and stage presence, has been one of the most prominent faces of NCT since its early days. Over the years, he has been actively involved in multiple subunits, including NCT 127, NCT DREAM, and even the supergroup SuperM.

Taking to Instagram, Mark shared a heartfelt handwritten letter addressed to fans, fondly known as “czennies.” Reflecting on his journey, he wrote that it had been “ten whole years” since his debut with NCT U in April 2016, a period filled with performances, memories, and growth.

A Dream Beyond the Spotlight

In his emotional note, Mark opened up about his long-held aspirations beyond the K-pop industry. He revealed that since his trainee days, he had dreamt of performing music in a more personal setting—busking with an acoustic guitar—and nurturing his passion for writing in English.

He explained that as his 10-year contract came to an end, he took time to reflect deeply on his future. This introspection led him to explore what he described as the “true form” of his dream, ultimately motivating him to step away and pursue it fully.

Gratitude Towards Members and Fans

Mark expressed heartfelt gratitude towards his fellow members, acknowledging both senior members who treated him like a younger brother and juniors who looked up to him as a leader. He thanked them for their support, understanding, and meaningful conversations during his decision-making process.

His message also carried deep appreciation for fans, who have stood by him throughout his career, contributing to what he described as “countless memories.”

Agency Confirms Mutual Decision

Following Mark’s announcement, SM Entertainment released an official statement confirming that the decision was mutual. The agency stated that after extensive discussions regarding his future direction, both parties agreed to conclude his exclusive contract.

As a result, Mark will cease all activities related to NCT and its subunits, including NCT 127 and NCT DREAM.

What Lies Ahead

While Mark has not revealed specific plans, his departure signals a new chapter—one that could see him explore music independently, writing, or other creative pursuits. His exit marks the end of an era for NCT, leaving fans emotional yet supportive of his decision.
