Marvel’s Thunderbolts Ends Box Office Run as Third-Lowest Grossing MCU Film-Here’s How Much it Earned

Despite positive reviews and MCU connections, Thunderbolts finishes with just $370 million globally, falling short of expectations and marking a shift in Marvel’s release strategy.

Los Angeles | June 7, 2025:
Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts, once tipped as a surefire summer blockbuster, has ended its theatrical run with a global collection of $370 million, making it the third-lowest grossing Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film to date. Despite favorable reviews and solid audience scores, the film failed to replicate the franchise’s usual box office magic.

The movie, released on May 2, was meant to continue Marvel’s early summer dominance that began with The Avengers in 2012. But unlike juggernauts like Avengers: Endgame ($2.7B) or Civil War ($1.15B), Thunderbolts underwhelmed—only marginally outperforming Eternals, Black Widow, and Captain America: The First Avenger.

Franchise Fatigue & Brand Recognition Issues

Critics and audiences largely praised the film for its performances and narrative cohesion, giving it approval ratings in the high 80s and 90s. However, analysts cite “franchise fatigue” and limited brand appeal of the Thunderbolts team as key reasons for the lackluster turnout.

Unlike household names like Iron Man or Captain America, the Thunderbolts—despite including familiar faces—failed to strike an emotional or cultural chord with general audiences. The film’s title, too, may have lacked the marketing weight to draw attention beyond MCU loyalists.

Marvel Adjusts Strategy After Box Office Miss

This underperformance appears to have prompted a strategic pivot at Marvel Studios. The next major tentpoles, Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, have both been rescheduled to December 2026 and 2027, respectively. The move away from the early summer slot suggests Marvel is rethinking its release formula in light of changing audience dynamics.

While breakout exceptions like Deadpool & Wolverine continue to defy trends, Thunderbolts joins recent misfires such as The Marvels, Quantumania, and Brave New World in what now seems like a transitional period for the MCU.
