Matt Cameron Departs Pearl Jam After 27 Years: ‘Forever Grateful for the Journey’

Legendary drummer Matt Cameron announces his exit from Pearl Jam after nearly three decades; band calls him a “true powerhouse” and a “forever friend.”

Los Angeles [US], July 7 – In a heartfelt announcement that marks the end of an era, Matt Cameron, the long-standing drummer of Pearl Jam, has officially parted ways with the band after 27 years of collaboration. Cameron confirmed his departure in an emotional Instagram post, expressing gratitude for the journey, friendships, and music that defined his time with the iconic grunge rock band. Pearl Jam also paid tribute to Cameron, hailing him as a “musical hero” and “true powerhouse.”

In a major development for rock music fans worldwide, Matt Cameron, the veteran drummer of Pearl Jam, has announced his departure from the band after an illustrious 27-year stint. Known for his explosive energy and precision behind the drum kit, Cameron took to Instagram to confirm the news and reflect on his time with the group.

“After 27 fantastic years, I have taken my final steps down the drum riser for the mighty Pearl Jam,” Cameron wrote in his emotional post.
“Much love and respect to Jeff, Ed, Mike and Stone for inviting me into the band in 1998 and for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime, filled with friendships, artistry, challenges and laughter. I am forever grateful to the crew, staff and fans the world over. It’s been an incredible journey. More to follow. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.”

Cameron’s journey with Pearl Jam began in 1998, a year after his first band, Soundgarden, disbanded. A pioneer of the Seattle grunge scene, he originally made his mark as Soundgarden’s drummer from 1986 to 1997, later rejoining the band during its reunion phase from 2010 until frontman Chris Cornell’s passing in 2017.

During his tenure with Pearl Jam, Cameron became the rhythmic backbone of the band’s sound, performing on every album from “Binaural” (2000) to their most recent works. Known for his technical mastery and versatility, he brought a fresh dynamic to Pearl Jam’s live and studio recordings. His departure now closes a significant chapter in the band’s legacy.

Pearl Jam also shared a moving statement, celebrating Cameron’s immense contribution and influence over the years.

“Matt Cameron has been a singular and true powerhouse of a musician and drummer,” the band wrote.
“He has propelled the last 27 years of Pearl Jam live shows and studio recordings. It was a deeply important chapter for our group and we wish him well always. He will be deeply missed and is forever our friend in art and music. We love you Matt.”

The band referred to Cameron as “one of our first musical heroes,” highlighting his work not only with Soundgarden but also with Skin Yard, another influential grunge act. Despite the announcement, Pearl Jam has not yet provided details about a possible replacement for upcoming tours or recordings.

Cameron is one of the rare musicians to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice, honored for his work with both Soundgarden and Pearl Jam — a testament to his enduring impact on the world of rock music.

Though he hasn’t elaborated on future plans, Cameron hinted at more updates to come, suggesting that his musical journey may be evolving rather than ending.
