Matthew Lawrence pitches an AI project to bring Robin Williams’ voice back to life.

July 27, 2025: San Diego, California Matthew Lawrence, who played one of Robin Williams’ kids in Mrs. Doubtfire, talked about his unique way of honoring the late comedian at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, July 25. He wants to use artificial intelligence (AI) to make “something really special” with Williams’ famous voice.

“I would love to do something really special with his voice, with the respect and okay from his family. That voice is just so iconic for a generation,” Lawrence, 45, told Entertainment Weekly. He said that Williams’ voice is known by everyone and that it would be “so cool” to have it in his brain and in everyone’s head.

In the 1993 comedy Mrs. Doubtfire, Lawrence and Williams acted with Sally Field, Mara Wilson, Lisa Jakub, and Pierce Brosnan. Williams played a father who pretends to be a nanny to be close to his kids. Williams sadly took his own life in August 2014 at the age of 63.

Lawrence got the notion to use AI for Williams’ voice after seeing an old advertisement with the actor that seemed to predict current technological trends. “It’s like this very modern, almost futuristic commercial he did with a computerized voiceover,” he told EW. “And it always stayed with me. And then, when he died and the A.I. came out, I thought, “Man, he has to be the voice of A.I.” He has to be the voice in anything. Yes, I would love to do that.

Lawrence sees Williams’ voice being used in a specific way, like providing directions on a phone. “It would be really great. “I swear to you,” he said with excitement.

In April, Lawrence told PEOPLE that he was going to dedicate his Masked Singer performance of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” to Williams. The Boy Meets World star said about how Williams treated him with great respect, even when he was only 12, and gave him great advise about life.

Lawrence said, “He really opened up.” “At 12 years old, he was so great to be able to give me the respect of an adult and let me see both sides of his life—the performer side and the private side—and how they fought with each other.” Lawrence said that Williams was still a helpful person in his life long after Mrs. Doubtfire ended, giving him advice that “definitely kept me from some dark places at times.”
