February 7, 2025: Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey has been confirmed to star in The Rage, an upcoming historical drama directed by Paul Greengrass. Previously known as The Hood, the film will focus on the dramatic events surrounding the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381, one of England’s most significant uprisings.
Written and directed by Greengrass, The Rage will be presented by FilmNation at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin. The film explores the socio-economic and political tensions in 14th-century England that led to the violent revolt.
McConaughey will portray a farmer who rises to lead the revolt, with speculation suggesting he may play the iconic Wat Tyler, the leader of the uprising who was tragically killed by forces loyal to King Richard II. Set against the backdrop of widespread discontent due to heavy taxation, the film will showcase the rebellion as peasants across England rally against the monarchy and political elite.
Directed by Paul Greengrass, known for his intense, action-driven films such as United 93 and Captain Phillips, The Rage promises to be a gripping historical drama. Greengrass will both write and direct the film, with Jason Blum producing through Blumhouse Productions alongside Greengrass and Joanna Kaye.
In addition to The Rage, McConaughey is collaborating with Paul Greengrass on another project, The Lost Bus, for Apple. The actor is also preparing for the release of The Rivals of Amziah King, which will premiere at this year’s SXSW festival.
