Meghan Markle’s Reported Vogue Cover Ambitions Spark Fallout With Former British Vogue Editor

May 26, 2025 : Meghan Markle’s complex relationship with the media has once again made headlines—this time over an alleged fallout with British Vogue’s former Editor-in-Chief, Edward Enninful, linked to a high-profile magazine cover opportunity that reportedly didn’t go as planned.

According to sources cited by Page Six, the Duchess of Sussex had been in discussions to appear in the September 2022 issue of British Vogue, timed with her keynote appearance at the One Young World Summit in Manchester. The issue was set to include extensive editorial content across both print and digital platforms.

However, tensions reportedly arose when supermodel Linda Evangelista was already slated for the coveted cover. Meghan, who reportedly had her sights set on more than just a UK appearance, is said to have withdrawn from the project altogether when her expectations were not met.

Global Ambitions and Creative Control

Insiders allege that Meghan had grander plans beyond the UK edition. She reportedly requested dual covers on both British and US Vogue and sought an unprecedented level of creative control, including the final say on the photographer, writer, cover lines, photo selections, and editing.

Meghan asked for control over everything, even wanting the issue to be global in reach. Nobody gets that—not even Beyoncé,” one insider claimed. This bold vision reportedly led Meghan to arrange a Zoom meeting with US Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour in an attempt to convince her to reconsider cover plans.

However, sources say the reception was cool and noncommittal, with Wintour having already booked Serena Williams as the US cover star for that edition. “Anna did the call to be polite,” said one insider, suggesting Wintour had little intention of reshuffling editorial plans.

Conflicting Narratives

While some claim Meghan actively pushed for a global cover takeover, others dispute this version of events, insisting that British Vogue had long courted the Duchess following her wedding to Prince Harry.

Nonetheless, it is widely believed that friction between Meghan’s team and Edward Enninful grew during negotiations. “Her team expected a print or at least a digital cover,” a source said. “But Enninful had already committed to another plan for that month.”

This isn’t Meghan’s first foray into working with British Vogue. In 2019, she guest-edited the magazine’s “Forces for Change” issue, highlighting women leaders and changemakers. That collaboration had been well received at the time, making the reported fallout over the 2022 issue all the more striking.

As of now, there has been no official comment from Meghan Markle, Anna Wintour, or Edward Enninful regarding the claims. The reports, however, once again cast a spotlight on the Duchess’s complicated relationship with legacy media and her pursuit of editorial autonomy on the global stage.
