March 31, 2025: Director Michael Mann has shared an exciting update regarding the much-anticipated sequel to Heat, confirming that the screenplay for Heat 2 is officially complete. In a recent Q&A with Vulture, Mann revealed that he has handed in the first draft of the script to Warner Bros., marking a significant milestone in the development of the project.

The plot details of Heat 2 remain under wraps, but fans of the original film are eager to see how the story will unfold. Released in 1995, Heat is widely regarded as one of Mann’s finest works. The film, which starred Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, focuses on the intense cat-and-mouse game between a criminal mastermind planning his last heist and a dedicated police lieutenant trying to capture him. The relationship between De Niro’s character, Neil McCauley, and Pacino’s, Vincent Hanna, is one of mutual respect, despite being on opposite sides of the law.

The sequel is expected to explore both prequel and sequel elements, inspired by Mann’s 2022 crime novel Heat 2, which he co-wrote with author Meg Gardiner. The novel expands on the events of the original film, providing deeper backstories for the characters and continuing the narrative beyond what was shown in the 1995 movie.

Mann’s latest film, Ferrari, which stars Adam Driver, Penelope Cruz, and Shailene Woodley, received positive attention for Cruz’s performance. Mann’s body of work includes notable films such as Thief, The Insider, Manhunter, and Miami Vice, further cementing his reputation as a master storyteller. Alongside Heat 2, Mann has also hinted at a future project centered around the 1968 Battle of Hue, one of the bloodiest battles of the Vietnam War.
