November 7, 2024: Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17 has officially set its release date for April 18, 2025, after a few shifts in schedule. Warner Bros. first moved the film’s release from March 29, 2024 to January 31, 2025, but has now pushed it further to the new April date. The decision follows the availability of an optimal release window, with the studio eager to show off the film in IMAX as well.
Mickey 17 marks Bong Joon Ho’s return to directing after his Oscar-winning Parasite, which made history as the first non-English language film to win Best Picture. This sci-fi thriller is adapted from Edward Ashton’s 2022 novel, known for its cerebral, high-concept narrative, drawing comparisons to The Martian and Dark Matter. The story follows Robert Pattinson as “Mickey 17,” a member of a human mission to colonize an ice planet who must confront the fact that his clone, intended to replace him, refuses to take over.
In addition to Pattinson, the film boasts a strong ensemble cast including Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo. Bong Joon Ho, known for his meticulous world-building and exploration of social themes, will once again serve as both writer and director, with the backing of his company, Offscreen, and notable producers such as Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner from Plan B.
