May 22, 2025 : Singer and actor Miley Cyrus revealed she suffered a traumatic medical emergency — an ovarian cyst rupture — while hosting her widely watched Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party special on NBC in 2023, co-hosted with music icon Dolly Parton.

In a candid conversation during The Zane Lowe Interview Series on Apple Music 1, Miley shared,
“I had a pretty traumatic experience on a show that I was doing with Lorne when I was doing my New Year’s show… I had a medical emergency. I had an ovarian cyst rupture.”
An ovarian cyst rupture — which involves a fluid-filled sac on or inside an ovary bursting and releasing contents into the abdomen — left the Grammy-winning artist in excruciating pain. Despite the distress, she pushed through the live show, performing alongside Dolly Parton, Sia, and Paris Hilton.

“It was really, really hard on me,” she admitted, revealing that the physical and emotional toll nearly led her to walk away from music altogether.
However, a powerful conversation with Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels helped change her course.
“I had dinner with Lorne and he said something that has stuck with me. He goes, ‘Six months—everybody has six months to feel sorry for themselves, and then we start to rebuild.’”
Miley said she realized she had used up that time and made the decision to return to music with renewed purpose.
“What I’ve always realized is that it will quit me before I ever quit it,” she said. “That’s not in the cards for me.”
Miley is now preparing to release her highly anticipated new album, Something Beautiful, slated to drop on May 30. The project marks not just a musical comeback, but a personal and artistic resurgence following a difficult chapter in her life.
