In a candid appearance on the Every Single Album podcast, Miley discussed the personal inspirations behind her most iconic records, including her bold 2013 release Bangerz, and the softer, introspective tone of 2017’s Younger Now.

💔 Bangerz Era and the First Breakup
Released at the height of her image reinvention, Bangerz marked a pivotal moment — not only in Miley’s career, but also in her personal life.
“This was the first time Liam and I called off our engagement during that time,” Miley said, pointing out that the album’s provocative style created friction between them.
“That wasn’t the ‘Last Song’ girl,” she added, referencing the film where the couple met in 2009.

The 32-year-old singer explained that the sexually charged image of Bangerz caused discomfort for those closest to her:

“My professional life was affecting my personal life a lot. Not only the outside world had a hard time coming with me, but my people on the inside had a hard time coming with me, too.”
💫 Younger Now: A Musical Retreat to ‘Innocence’
Years later, when Miley and Liam reconciled in 2016 and eventually married in 2018, she shifted her artistic tone. Younger Now, released in 2017, reflected a return to perceived innocence — a move she admits was partly influenced by her desire to sustain their relationship.
“I kind of played into this innocence… because I think that was a way to keep and a way to stay,” she said. “If I’m younger now, if I’m less awake as this sexual woman publicly, then this is going to be the way that I can keep, like, a happy home.”
Miley also shared how the pressure to align with Liam’s public image, particularly his association with the Hemsworth family and brother Chris Hemsworth’s Marvel fame, influenced her decisions.
“I felt it was my duty… because my plan was, this time, I didn’t want the relationship to fall apart,” she admitted.
🕊️ Marriage, Divorce, and Musical Evolution
Miley and Liam got married in an intimate ceremony in December 2018 but split less than a year later. Liam filed for divorce in August 2019, and the divorce was finalized in early 2020.
Miley has since continued her musical evolution. She recently released her ninth studio album, Something Beautiful, further showcasing her ability to blend vulnerability with strength through her music.
