Millie Bobby Brown Claps Back At Critics Over Accent And Online Bullying

March 11, 2025: Millie Bobby Brown, the 21-year-old star of Netflix’s hit series Stranger Things, recently addressed the ongoing criticism surrounding her fluctuating accent, which some have accused of shifting between British and American. In an interview with E! News, Brown spoke candidly about the backlash and explained that her ability to adapt to different accents is an integral part of her acting career.

Brown, who married American Jake Bongiovi in May 2023, shared that living between the United States and England has made it natural for her to switch between accents depending on her surroundings. “When I’m around his family, I immediately go into, like, an American accent,” she said. “But then I was just in England, and then the second I hear my mom and dad’s accent, I just go right back.” This fluidity in her speech reflects her international upbringing and her extensive experience in the entertainment industry.

The actress also emphasized how her acting career has helped hone this skill, noting, “You want me to play these characters, but you expect me not to morph into people,” adding, “What I hear is what I do. It’s all part of it.” For Brown, switching accents isn’t just a reaction to her environment but an essential part of her craft, helping her embody different roles convincingly.

Beyond addressing the accent issue, Brown also tackled a more personal subject: online bullying. Recently, some social media users criticized her appearance, accusing her of looking too old for her age. In an emotional Instagram video shared earlier this month, Brown took a stand against these remarks, saying, “I want to take a moment to address something that I think is bigger than just me—something that affects every young woman who grows up under public scrutiny.”

The actress, who has been in the public eye since she was a child on Stranger Things, emphasized how she has grown and evolved since her early days on the show. “I’ve changed. I’ve grown. I’m not the same person I was when I was 12, 13, or 14 years old,” she explained, adding that it is unfair to expect her to remain frozen in time. Brown’s message resonated with many fans, particularly young women who face similar pressures and criticism as they grow up under constant public scrutiny.

In speaking out about both the criticism of her accent and her appearance, Brown continues to advocate for self-acceptance and challenges the unrealistic standards often placed on young women in the spotlight.
