Millie Bobby Brown Responds To Criticism Over Changing Accents: ‘It’s All Part Of My Craft’

March 16, 2025: Millie Bobby Brown recently addressed the ongoing criticism surrounding her fluctuating accents, which have been a topic of conversation among fans and media. In a candid conversation on the SmartLess podcast, the Stranger Things star shared her frustrations over what she calls “accent-gate,” a period when her changing accents – from British to American – were widely discussed and criticized.

“That was such a huge thing for a minute,” Brown said. “I actually call it the ‘accent-gate’ because it’s so frustrating because that was everywhere. Like for a second, everyone was talking about my accent, and they had a real problem with it. And I was like, ‘Guys, I’m married to an American.'”

Brown, who married Jake Bongiovi in May 2024, explained that her environment played a role in her accent shifts. “When I’m around his family, I immediately go into, like, an American accent. But then I was just in England, and then the second I hear my mom and dad’s accent, I just go right back,” she said, emphasizing that accents naturally change depending on the people around her.

As for her profession, Brown explained that being an actor is central to her accent morphing. “You want me to play these characters, but you expect me not to morph into people. What I hear is what I do. It’s all part of it,” she added, further elaborating that adapting her accent to fit roles and situations is a natural part of her craft.

This isn’t the first time the actress has addressed the subject. Last year, in an interview with internet personality Max Balegde, she shared similar sentiments, saying, “I’m an actor. I grew up in the public eye. I grew up in America. I come to set, and I’m an actor and I adapt, and so I want to mimic other people!”
