Mirror, Mirror, What Went Wrong? Disney’s Snow White Faces Steep Climb to Break Even

Disney’s long-awaited live-action remake of Snow White may have beauty, nostalgia, and big names—but what it doesn’t seem to have is box office legs.

📆 March 29, 2025 |

After a decade in development and a production budget of $240–270 million, the film needs a minimum of $540–675 million to break even. Right now? It’s not even close.

💸 The Numbers So Far

  • Opening Weekend (Global): $87 million
    • Domestic: $43 million
    • International: $44 million
  • Current Domestic Total (after 1 week): $50+ million
  • Budget: $240–270 million
  • Break-Even Target: $540–675 million

Even with a massive 4,200-screen release—the biggest of the year—Snow White failed to charm audiences like its predecessors (The Lion King, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast), all of which opened in the $170M+ range.

👑 Royal Cast, Real Controversy

Starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot, the film has been shadowed by:

  • Rachel Zegler’s polarizing political remarks
  • Gal Gadot’s IDF past and reported on-set tensions
  • Peter Dinklage’s early criticism of the film’s reimagining of the dwarves

Despite Zegler’s praised performance as Snow White, Gadot’s take on the Evil Queen has drawn flak. Meanwhile, critics were far from kind:

  • Rotten Tomatoes (Critics): 42%
  • IMDb: 1.6
  • CinemaScore: B+ (a lukewarm reception for a family film)

💼 Marketing Magic That Didn’t Sparkle

The marketing was creative but puzzling:

  • Allegra x Snow White allergy campaign
  • Mattel collector dolls priced at ₹75 each

While these may have moved merch, they didn’t push ticket sales hard enough.

🏆 How Does It Compare?

Despite landing in the Top 5 Grossers of 2025 (so far), Snow White trails behind titles like:

  • Paddington in Peru
  • Captain America: Brave New World ($402M worldwide)
  • One of Them Days
  • Even Steven Soderbergh’s Black Bag, despite a much smaller budget

📉 Verdict: Happily Never After?

If Disney was banking on another billion-dollar live-action success, Snow White is missing the magic mirror. With The Accountant 2 and Warfare poised to take over screens, the princess’s reign might be cut short.

Unless word-of-mouth turns unexpectedly positive or international markets show a surge, Snow White risks being remembered not for its fairy tale charm, but for being one of Disney’s costliest underperformers.
