Mithoon Backs AR Rahman Amid Row
Composer defends Rahman’s remarks, hails his lasting impact on Indian music
January 23, 2026: Bollywood composer Mithoon has come out in strong support of Oscar-winning musician AR Rahman following the controversy over his remarks in a BBC Asian Network interview. Rahman’s comments on shifting power dynamics in the music industry—suggesting that decision-making has moved into the hands of non-creative individuals and hinting it “might be a communal thing”—sparked widespread debate. Addressing the backlash, Rahman later released a video clarification, saying his words were misinterpreted and that he never intended to hurt any sentiments.
Speaking to Mid-Day, Mithoon praised Rahman’s contribution to Indian music and defended his right to express his views. “I have grown up looking up to Rahman sir. He was the man who threw every textbook rule out of the window, yet created a powerful impact in our industry,” he said. Mithoon added that after over three decades in the profession, Rahman’s body of work and the audience’s continued love for his music speak louder than any controversy.
On the issue of alleged power shifts, Mithoon said he has not personally experienced such changes but acknowledged that similar trends exist across professions. He stressed that for artists, the priority should always be the creative process and audience connection. Rahman, meanwhile, reiterated that music has always been his way of celebrating India’s cultural diversity and inclusivity, reaffirming his commitment to his craft and thanking the country for its continued support.
