Mohammad Azharuddin's son follows father's footsteps, joins politics
June 16, 2025: Following in his father’s footsteps, Mohammad Asaduddin, son of former Indian cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin, has officially stepped into the political arena. He has been appointed as General Secretary of the Telangana Congress, among a list of 69 new office-bearers announced by the party earlier this week.
Asaduddin, a 35-year-old law graduate and former Ranji Trophy player, is no stranger to public life. He actively participated in his father’s campaign during the 2023 Telangana Assembly Elections, especially in the Jubilee Hills constituency, where Azharuddin lost to BRS’s Maganti Gopinath by a margin of over 16,000 votes.

The sudden demise of sitting MLA Maganti Gopinath due to a heart attack has left the Jubilee Hills seat vacant, leading to speculation that Asaduddin might be fielded by the Congress in the upcoming bypoll.
Reflecting on his new role, Asaduddin told The Print, “I don’t know what’s in store for me. My dad is still active in politics. Let’s see.” He emphasized his ongoing connection with the people of Jubilee Hills, despite the electoral defeat, saying, “I stayed strongly connected with the people, taking up their issues.”
Previously, Asaduddin also served as the Secretary of the Youth Congress’ Sports Cell in Telangana. He is married to Anam Mirza, the sister of tennis star Sania Mirza.
On this proud occasion, Azharuddin took to social media, writing, “A proud and emotional moment for me as my son, Mohammed Asaduddin, steps into his official role in public life… May he stay grounded, focused, and guided by the values that truly matter.”
With his background in sports, law, and grassroots engagement, Asaduddin’s political journey is being closely watched as a promising new chapter in the Congress party’s efforts in Telangana.
