Mortal Kombat II Gets New Release Date: Warner Bros. Pushes Sequel to May 2026

The much-anticipated sequel to the 2021 hit Mortal Kombat will now hit theatres on May 15, 2026, with Karl Urban leading the cast as Johnny Cage.

Mortal Kombat II Release Date Shifted

Washington DC [US], August 30: Fans of the cult video game franchise Mortal Kombat will have to wait a little longer to witness the next chapter unfold on the big screen. Warner Bros. has officially rescheduled the release of Mortal Kombat II, moving it from its earlier slot of October 24, 2025, to a new date — May 15, 2026.

The change, reported by The Hollywood Reporter, comes as part of the studio’s reshuffling of its release calendar, ensuring the highly awaited martial arts fantasy film gets a summer release window to maximize global box office potential.

What to Expect from the Sequel

Directed by Simon McQuoid, who also helmed the 2021 reboot, Mortal Kombat II promises an even bigger spectacle, expanding its universe of fighters and battles. The story once again dives into the age-old battle where a group of Earth’s defenders must protect humanity from the dark and deadly forces of Outworld.

Joining the cast is Karl Urban in the fan-favorite role of Johnny Cage, alongside an ensemble including Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Tati Gabrielle, Lewis Tan, Damon Herriman, Chin Han, Tadanobu Asano, Joe Taslim, and Hiroyuki Sanada.

The film, penned by Jeremy Slater, continues the legacy of the video game series originally created by Ed Boon and John Tobias in the 1990s.

Legacy and Hype Around Mortal Kombat II

This sequel serves as the fourth installment in the Mortal Kombat film franchise and a direct follow-up to the 2021 movie, which rebooted the series for a new generation of audiences. With producer James Wan (of Aquaman fame) backing the project, expectations are sky-high for brutal fight sequences, iconic finishing moves, and a deeper dive into the Mortal Kombat mythology.

Adding to the excitement, the first trailer for Mortal Kombat II dropped online last month, giving fans a taste of the intense action and fresh characters set to make their debut.

While the wait is longer than expected, the new release date positions Mortal Kombat II as one of the biggest summer blockbusters of 2026, giving fans ample time to build anticipation. For now, Earthrealm warriors will need patience — the ultimate fight is coming, just not this year.
