Mufasa: The Lion King Stellar Run at The Box Office, Set to Roar Past Sonic the Hedgehog 3

“Disney’s Mufasa nears a domestic milestone, closing in on Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s $225M+ collection after a strong hold at the box office.”

January 29, 2025: Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King is on the brink of surpassing Sonic the Hedgehog 3 at the US box office. While the film has already crossed the $600 million mark worldwide, it trails its rival domestically by just under $6 million. With its strong weekend numbers, Mufasa is poised to outpace the animated action-comedy soon.

Both films premiered on December 20, creating a heated box-office rivalry. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 initially outshined Mufasa with a stellar $60.1 million opening weekend—nearly 70% higher than Mufasa’s $35.4 million debut. However, Disney’s latest blockbuster has since gained momentum, dominating daily domestic charts.

Box Office Figures

According to Luiz Fernando’s report, Mufasa: The Lion King earned an impressive $8.7 million over its sixth three-day weekend despite losing 135 theaters. With only a 27.8% drop in revenue from the previous weekend, the film’s US box-office total now stands at $221.1 million.

Meanwhile, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 garnered $5.5 million during the same weekend, despite losing 209 theaters. The action-adventure movie has grossed $226.1 million in the US to date, maintaining a slight lead.

Future Projections

Industry insiders predict that Mufasa will soon overtake Sonic 3’s domestic tally. The Disney epic is projected to earn between $250 million and $260 million in the US, whereas Sonic 3’s total is expected to plateau at approximately $245 million.

Interestingly, Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s availability on digital platforms may impact its theatrical momentum, unlike Mufasa, which remains exclusive to cinemas for now.

As the competition heats up, it’s clear that Mufasa’s tale of the iconic lion king is resonating with audiences globally. With sustained momentum, Disney’s latest animated feature is set to claim its throne at the US box office.
