Mukesh Khanna Criticises Ranbir Kapoor’s Casting as Lord Ram: ‘His Negative Personality Could Impact the Role’

“Veteran actor Mukesh Khanna raises concerns over Ranbir Kapoor’s portrayal of Lord Ram in Nitesh Tiwari’s ambitious Ramayana adaptation, citing the actor’s recent roles and off-screen image.”

December 19, 2024: Veteran actor Mukesh Khanna, known for his iconic portrayal of Bhishma in Mahabharat, has voiced his reservations about Ranbir Kapoor playing the role of Lord Ram in director Nitesh Tiwari’s ambitious two-part adaptation of the Ramayana. In a candid interview with Midday, Mukesh questioned whether Ranbir’s real-life persona and the negative shades of his recent blockbuster Animal might impact the portrayal of one of Hindu mythology’s most revered characters.

Mukesh Khanna’s Concerns

Mukesh initially refrained from commenting but later expressed doubts about Ranbir’s ability to embody the essence of Lord Ram. “If one is playing Lord Ram, they must carry the divine aura associated with him. A performer who parties, drinks, or exudes a lewd personality in real life may struggle to convince audiences as Ram. It reflects on-screen,” Mukesh remarked.

Drawing comparisons with Arun Govil, who became synonymous with Lord Ram through the iconic television adaptation, Mukesh stated, “Arun Govil set the gold standard. Anyone stepping into this role will inevitably be compared to him. You can’t cast someone who looks like Raavan to play Ram.”

He also cited the lukewarm reception of Prabhas in Adipurush, saying, “Prabhas wasn’t accepted despite being a superstar, not because he’s a bad actor, but because he didn’t look like Ram. Ranbir is a fine actor, but the darker shades of his character in Animal could create a disconnect.”

About the Ramayana Film

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana is one of the most highly anticipated films in Indian cinema. The project boasts an ensemble cast with Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Lara Dutta as Kaikeyi, Sunny Deol as Hanuman, and Sheeba Chaddha as Manthara.

The film will be released in two parts: Part One is slated for 2026, while Part Two is scheduled for 2027. A leaked image from the set earlier this year featuring Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi in costume heightened fan expectations.

Ranbir Kapoor, speaking about the project in an interview with Deadline, shared his excitement: “Ramayana is India’s greatest story, and portraying Lord Ram is a deeply gratifying opportunity. We’ve completed shooting for Part One and will soon begin Part Two.”

Netizens React

Mukesh Khanna’s comments have sparked a debate online. While some agree with his concerns, others defend Ranbir, citing his versatility as an actor. Fans remain divided as they eagerly await the film, hoping it does justice to the timeless epic.
