Mumbai Police Issues Third Summons to Kunal Kamra Over Disparaging Remarks

April 2, 2025: Mumbai Police have issued a third summons to stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra, requesting his appearance for clarification regarding his controversial remarks about Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde in his latest stand-up video, “Naya Bharat,” on YouTube. The police have asked Kamra to record his statement on April 5.

According to officials from Mumbai Police, Kamra had previously been called twice for questioning but failed to appear. The third notice comes after Kamra’s continued absence from the earlier summons.

The investigation is focusing on Kamra’s remarks about Shinde, which allegedly mocked the former Chief Minister. However, police are also looking into whether Kamra’s satirical comments extend to other prominent personalities, including politicians, actors, and sportspersons. If the investigation finds further inappropriate remarks, authorities have stated that action will be taken against him.

While Kamra’s lawyer has been in touch with the police, the comedian himself has not engaged directly with officials. As of now, three separate complaints have been filed against Kamra at the Khar Police Station, with one filed by the Mayor of Jalgaon and the other two by a hotelier and a businessman from Nashik.

Earlier this week, the Madras High Court granted Kamra interim anticipatory bail until April 7, with conditions. Kamra had approached the court seeking transit bail, citing several threats he had received following his satirical comments about Shinde. His remarks, especially the “gaddar” (traitor) joke, had stirred political controversy, drawing condemnation from various leaders who called for action against the comedian.

As the investigation continues, Kunal Kamra’s legal troubles seem far from over, as police seek clarity on his statements and the wider implications of his remarks.
