During the conversation, Malavika recalled an unsettling encounter from around 9:30 PM one evening when she was traveling with two of her female friends. As their train halted at a station, a man approached the window and made an inappropriate remark: “Ek chumma degi kya?” (“Will you give me a kiss?”).
“We froze,” she recalled. “We were just three young girls, completely vulnerable.” The chilling memory led her to challenge the widely accepted narrative that Mumbai is inherently safe for women. “People often say Mumbai is safe for women, but I’d like to correct that perception,” she added.
The viral nature of her remarks caught the attention of Mumbai Police, who issued a public response on X (formerly Twitter). Acknowledging the seriousness of her experience, the department wrote: “Ms @MalavikaM_ We came across an article in an online portal of a newspaper, in which you shared your experience and raised concern over women’s safety in the city. We can imagine that experiences like these can be startling and leave a long-term impact.”
They added a strong advisory: “No matter what time of the day or place in the city, please reach out to us at 112/100 and we will provide support as soon as we can. Non-reporting emboldens the offender.”
Reaffirming their commitment, the department said, “Mumbai city has always been safe for women, and we will leave no stone unturned to make it better. Once reported, the offender will be suitably & lawfully dealt with.”
The police also urged Malavika to use her platform to encourage reporting such incidents, adding, “It may help better in solving such issues, which are aberrations and can’t be generalised.”
Malavika Mohanan, known for her roles in Beyond the Clouds and Master, continues to balance a flourishing film career with advocacy for social issues. Her upcoming projects include The Raja Saab, Sardar 2, and Hridayapoorvam.
