Veteran actress Mumtaz shared that filmmaker Yash Chopra had once proposed marriage to her, but she declined as she wanted to prioritise her career.

June-1, 2025: Veteran Bollywood actress Mumtaz, one of the highest-paid and most celebrated stars of the 1970s, recently shared a candid memory about Yash Chopra during an interview with Radio Nasha. Mumtaz revealed that the legendary filmmaker, known for his romantic classics, had once proposed marriage to her, but she turned him down as she was keen to focus on her career.

“He liked me a lot. He was an assistant to his brother BR Chopra at the time. He told me very respectfully, ‘Moti Moti, I love you,’” Mumtaz recounted with a smile. “I told him, ‘No, I want to focus on my work, I want to get somewhere.’”

Praising Yash Chopra’s Character
Mumtaz was quick to clarify that Yash Chopra was a thorough gentleman. “He was a very good man, and there are very few good directors and people like him. Even his son, Aditya, is a wonderful director now,” she said. “He never made me feel uncomfortable or tried to cross the line. When he got married later, I was at his wedding. We were very good friends.”

A Long-Lasting Legacy
Mumtaz, who starred in iconic films like Do Raaste, Bandhan, and Khilona, later married businessman Mayur Madhvani in 1974 and took a 13-year break from acting. Speaking to Instant Bollywood recently, she shared that while she is open to a comeback, she doesn’t see herself playing elderly roles unless they truly align with her personality. “I won’t play just anyone’s mother. If I return, it will be for a role that truly suits me,” she said.
