November 17, 2024: South Indian actress Nayanthara has issued a strongly-worded open letter targeting fellow actor and producer Dhanush over an ongoing legal tussle concerning her Netflix documentary, Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale. The letter comes after Dhanush reportedly denied permission for using any footage or songs from the 2015 blockbuster Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, which he had produced. The issue escalated when Dhanush served a legal notice seeking ₹10 crore in damages for alleged unauthorised usage of behind-the-scenes (BTS) visuals in the documentary.
In the three-page letter shared on her social media, Nayanthara alleged that Dhanush’s actions stemmed from personal grudges and that his refusal to issue a No Objection Certificate (NOC) hindered the documentary’s production for two years. “Your decision to deny permission is not based on business but vengeance. Even lyrics with deep sentimental value were refused,” she wrote.
Nayanthara expressed disappointment at Dhanush’s alleged behavior, claiming it reflected poorly on his character. She detailed how Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, a film she holds dear, was excluded from the documentary despite its cultural and personal significance.
She further accused Dhanush of harbouring animosity ever since the film became a blockbuster, stating, “It’s almost been 10 years since the film’s release, yet your displeasure over its success and the words you spoke have left unhealable scars.”
Taking a dig at Dhanush’s role as a producer, Nayanthara questioned whether he believed he had unlimited control over the freedom of others. “Does a producer become an emperor, controlling the lives, freedom, and liberty of everyone on set?” she asked.
The actress also addressed Dhanush’s legal notice, which objected to three seconds of BTS material and demanded ₹10 crore in damages. She called the move an “all-time low” and expressed dismay at the extent to which the situation had deteriorated.
Urging Dhanush to embrace positivity, Nayanthara wrote, “The world is big enough for everyone. It’s okay for people you know to succeed and be happy. There is joy in celebrating others’ success.” She ended the letter with a plea for spreading love and positivity, while also hinting at taking the legal battle forward.
Initially conceived as a wedding film, Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale explores the actress’s life, love, and career. Directed by her husband Vignesh Shivan, the documentary is set to premiere on Netflix on November 18, Nayanthara’s birthday.
