November 30, 2024: The legal battle between actors Dhanush and Nayanthara has taken a dramatic turn, with Nayanthara sharing a cryptic Instagram story hinting at “karma” taking its course. The actress posted, “Karma Says!!! When you destroy someone’s life with lies, take it as a loan, it will come back to you with interest,” sparking widespread speculation about its intended target.
This post comes shortly after Dhanush filed a lawsuit against Nayanthara and her husband, filmmaker Vignesh Shivan, over the alleged unauthorized use of clips from the 2015 film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan in the Netflix documentary Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairytale.
The Madras High Court has instructed Nayanthara and her team to respond to the allegations, which include claims of copyright infringement and a demand for damages amounting to ₹10 crore.
According to Dhanush, the behind-the-scenes footage used in the documentary belongs to his production company, Wunderbar Films Private Limited, and was included without proper authorisation. His legal notice demands the removal of the disputed content and warns of further legal proceedings if the demand is not met within 24 hours.
In her open letter, Nayanthara addressed the allegations, explaining that her team made repeated attempts over two years to secure Dhanush’s permission to use the footage. When a No Objection Certificate (NOC) was not granted, they opted to use visuals from personal devices. She expressed disbelief over the legal notice, which she described as disproportionate to the alleged infraction, stating, “What’s shocking is your legal notice for a mere 3-second clip. This is an all-time low and speaks volumes about your character.”
Dhanush’s legal representative has countered Nayanthara’s claims, emphasising that the footage was shot under the commission of Wunderbar Films and that the actress has failed to provide evidence supporting her version of events. The statement reiterated the demand to remove the content, stating that failure to comply would result in legal proceedings.
The ongoing feud has drawn significant public attention, with fans divided over the dispute. Nayanthara’s cryptic message about “karma” has added to the intrigue, as many speculate it reflects her frustrations with the legal proceedings.
The dispute underscores the complexities of intellectual property rights in the entertainment industry and raises questions about ethical practices in creative collaborations. With both parties holding firm on their stances, the coming days are likely to bring further developments in this high-profile case.
