Netflix Announces Oscar-Nominated Short Film ‘Anuja’ Set To Release In Feb

January 30, 2025: Netflix has announced that the Oscar-nominated Indian short film Anuja will be available for streaming on February 5.

The announcement was made via the platform’s official Instagram account, where the film was described as a story of resilience, sisterhood, and hope. Directed by Adam J. Graves, Anuja has been nominated for Best Live Action Short Film at the 97th Academy Awards, alongside other contenders such as Alien, I’m Not a Robot, The Last Ranger, and A Man Who Would Not Remain Silent. The Oscar nominations were revealed on January 23 by Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott.

The story of Anuja follows a nine-year-old girl named Anuja, who works with her older sister, Palak, in a back-alley garment factory. The plot explores the difficult decision Anuja faces, which could change the course of her future and her family’s well-being. The film has received significant attention, particularly from Bollywood stars like Priyanka Chopra and producer Guneet Monga.

Priyanka Chopra, who has supported the film, praised it for shedding light on a global issue that affects millions of children: the tough choice between a better future and the harsh realities of their present. She called Anuja a poignant, thought-provoking film that encourages deep reflection on how our choices shape our lives. “I am immensely proud to be associated with such a phenomenal and impactful project,” she said.

Guneet Monga, one of the film’s producers, expressed her excitement about the film’s journey, describing Anuja as a story of unparalleled courage told through an empowered lens. She emphasized the significance of being a part of this project, alongside producers Mindy Kaling, Suchitra Mattai, and Krushan Naik, and with Priyanka Chopra championing their story.

For Guneet Monga, Anuja marks her third Academy Award nomination. She previously earned accolades for The Elephant Whisperers and Period: End of Sentence, both of which won Oscars. As Anuja gets ready for its Netflix release on February 5, it marks a pivotal moment in Indian cinema, bringing attention to important social issues while celebrating storytelling with depth and heart.
