Nicole Kidman Reveals 3 A.M. Writing Ritual At Cannes 2025, Honored with Women in Motion Award
May 20, 2025 : Academy Award-winning actress Nicole Kidman offered a rare glimpse into her creative life while attending the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, where she was honored with the prestigious Women in Motion Award by Kering.
In a candid conversation with Variety’s Angelique Jackson on Sunday, May 18, the 57-year-old actress spoke about how her artistic inspiration often strikes in the early hours of the morning.
“I do it at 3 a.m., writing sessions,” Kidman revealed. “I wake up and I’ll write something — be it a dream or something circulating in my head, my life, and my heart at that time.”
She added that she finds the 2–3 a.m. window uniquely fertile for creativity:
“You’re in that slightly removed state from reality, but your dreams and psyche are very present.”
Despite her ongoing habit of writing, Kidman noted she has no immediate plans to co-write a project, but remained open to the idea, saying, “I always say no and turn around and change my mind.”
For her conversation session, Kidman wore a chic all-black ensemble, featuring low-rise jeans and a fitted leather jacket. For the award ceremony, she stunned in a custom red lace Balenciaga gown, turning heads on the red carpet despite not having a film at Cannes this year.
Though not showcasing a film at Cannes this year, Kidman’s presence — both on stage and on the red carpet — proved why she remains a cinematic and cultural icon.
